Reading and the Squid...What does that even mean?

Dr. Maryanne Wolf, a renowned child development specialist, UCLA professor-in-residence of Education, Director of the UCLA Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners and Social Justice, has written a fascinating book titled "Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain." In this book, Wolf explains how scientists in the 1950s studied the squid's central axon to understand how neurons function and repair themselves when necessary. Wolf draws a parallel between this research and the study of how the human brain reads, adapts, and compensates when faced with challenges. This is especially important when it comes to helping children who struggle with reading, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach. By utilizing their strengths and understanding how their brain adapts, we can provide personalized support to help them overcome their challenges and become successful readers.
